Now What? Turning Inspiration Into Action

By Jaime Bochet

There’s a scene in the 1994 film Forrest Gump where a large group of runners follow Forrest as he crisscrosses the United States on foot. When he finally stops after more than three years and says, “I’m pretty tired, I think I’ll go home now,” his followers are puzzled. One asks, “Now what are we supposed to do?”

It’s the same question many of us face after a lightbulb moment, an inspiring CE event, or a team meeting: “How do I implement what I just experienced, AND make it matter to those around me?”

Why Change Feels Hard

Most people crave roadmaps, and with good reason. For example, veterinary healthcare teams rely on treatment protocols, diagnostic algorithms, and checklists because they provide consistency and confidence. Processes help keep a busy practice from spinning out of control.

Habits however, can be double-edged, and trying something new can feel scary. Because routines feel safe, changing them can feel like pulling the rug out from under the team. The risk is that processes that don’t evolve with growing needs, new staff, or shifting client needs can fail.

Change is daunting not just because it disrupts, but because we can’t be sure the “new way” will work better than the old. The conflict is real: we leave a conference energized, ready to act, but the next morning, with a full schedule, the question creeps in: “What do we do now?”

Inspiration alone won’t bridge that gap. Real implementation requires a framework that turns ideas into practical, intentional action.

Effectively Implementing Change in 3-2-1

The 3-2-1 method is often used in goalsetting and professional development, but it can be applied to any situation that requires actionable next steps. It’s structured so that after an experience, you write down:

  • 3 things you learned
  • 2 things you will apply immediately
  • 1 action you will take to share your insights with your team

It’s simple, memorable, and forces you to turn inspiration into action while reinforcing learning by sharing with your team.

Why 3-2-1 Works

  • It’s specific: “Apply immediately” can be as simple as trying a new client question tomorrow.
  • It’s collaborative: Sharing one takeaway invites accountability and ripple effects.
  • It’s forgiving: Not every attempt will succeed. The point is movement, not perfection.

The Forrest Gump scene resonates because it captures the pause between inspiration and action. Change isn’t about waiting for someone else to tell you what to do – it’s about setting your own next steps and taking them.

3-2-1 for you, right now:

  • 3 truths: Inspiration fades, habits resist, failure teaches.
  • 2 takeaways: Write down what matters, act quickly on small wins.
  • 1 action: Try the 3-2-1 method after your next meeting and see how far it carries you.

Ideas only get you so far. That’s where strategic partners (like marketing agencies) come in: helping teams turn insights into action, distilling complexity into clear next steps, and building practical frameworks that make meaningful change stick.
